Gore Vidal (1925 - )
Gore Vidal began writing his first novel in his early twentie. He is the quintessential 20th century Person of Letters, and has written short fiction, essays, plays, screenplays, histories and novels. With a prose as precise as Jane Austen, he deepened our understanding of the American experience with humor and by recognizing our very subjective revisionist mythology. His historical fictions are more like meditations on the past than they are fiction. His Realist fictions examined homosexual life in 1940s America when few other major writers dared. On all levels, Vidal is a writer of many parts. He is currently well-known for his frequent television appearances, where he still delivers scathing commentary on politics and everyday life.
