Graham Greene (1904-1991)
Like Somerset Maugham, Greene often wrote about the British abroad, confronting other cultures during the last days of the Empire. Also like Maugham, the film versions of his novels have been often-aired on cable channels and in local theatres. Despite his fascination with moral and philosophical ambiguity, Greene has always been a popular writer. Consequently, some of his novels are known as "entertainments," as distinguishable from his more serious writing. He also explored the genres of the mystery novel and spy thriller, particularly in his later work. His books are currently much-sought-after as collectibles.
