Featured Publisher: Kayak Press

George Hitchcock, founder, publisher and editor of Kayak Press began his operation in San Francisco in 1962. The design hallmarks of his books included: stapled wrappers, colored inks, and illustrations in calligraphy, surreal imagery or collages. Sometimes, tipped-in lithographs were bound in on fine papers.

Early Kayak Press writers include: Raymond Carver, Philip Levine, Charles Simic, Jay Wright and James Tate. Artists included Carolee Schneemann, Tomie de Paola and Jean Varda. Hitchcock's poetry magazine, Kayak, was published between 1964-1984. with contributions by writers such as Galway Kinnell, William Matthews, Faye Kicknosway, Jack Gilbert, Yusef Komunyakaa, Ellen Gilchrist, Franz Wright, Sharon Olds, Frank Stanford, Charles Baxter, Margaret Atwood, Mark Doty and Marvin Bell.
