Truman Capote (1924-1984)

Although we associate Capote with the New York social elite, he was actually born in New Orleans and raised in Alabama. In 1933, he moved to New York to live with his mother and stepfather, who gave him the name "Truman Capote." Capote's lifelong fascination with lurid truth led to his writing In Cold Blood, a blend of fact and fiction. Capote was somewhat a media darling, attracting the attentions of Andy Warhol, Johnny Carson and other celebrities although his lifelong friendship with Harper Lee, a childhood friend, was probably more reflective of his closer nature. His childhood in the South undoubtedly contributed to his explorations of a gothic prose style and the aberrant behavior of his characters.
